Souzana Van Horn is a multi-award winning belly dancer. Her love of belly dancing shines through in both her instructional classes and live performances.
Whether Souzana is performing a choreographed piece, or an improvisational work, her passion shows, and her dancing is always elegant, regal, and emotive.
Souzana’s strong work ethic and pursuit for excellence combined with her accepting spirit, inspires her students not only to work hard so that they may grow as dancers and performers, but also to remember to love and enjoy themselves along the way.
Souzana began her belly dance training in the late 90s at Kismet in Salt Lake City, Utah under the direction of Yasamina. Since then she has studied with many world renowned instructors including Aunt Rocky, Hadia, Saqra, Sahra Saeeda, Eva Cernik, Bozenka, Karim Nagi and more. Souzana specializes in Classic American Oriental style belly dance, Egyptian Raks Sharki, and folk dances from the Middle East and North Africa. Curiosity and a strong sense of adventure led her to study many other dance forms including: Latin, West African, Polynesian, Jazz, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Tap, and Ballet.
In 2013, Souzana relocated to Eugene, Oregon from Fairbanks, Alaska. While living in Alaska she taught dance classes and performed for almost 13 years. In 2001 Souzana helped form Tundra Caravan Middle Eastern Dance Troupe, whose mission offered a broader understanding of Middle Eastern Dance to the community through outreach and education, while fostering an environment for students to expand and appreciate their experience as emerging dancers. Souzana led the troupe as co-artistic director and president from 2005 to 2013 and helped facilitate workshops with master instructors, gala shows, and a yearly recital to showcase students throughout the community, including Tundra Caravan’s own student troupe.
In 2006, Souzana founded her own belly dance school in which she offered beginning through advanced classes for children, teens, and adults. As adjunct faculty, Souzana taught a class for University of Alaska Fairbanks and is hired annually from 2005-2015 as a guest artist for the esteemed Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival. This has given her the unique opportunity to work, collaborate, and perform with artists of many genres from Fairbanks and around the world.
In her new community, Souzana has continued her work with outreach and education by serving on the Middle Eastern Dance Guild of Eugene (MEDGE) board of directors as Consultant and President, 2014-2016. MEDGE is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide a venue to foster performance, education, and enjoyment of Middle Eastern Dance and music in Eugene, Oregon.
